Decathlon ASP52 2s engine fit Empty
PostSubject: Decathlon ASP52 2s engine fit   Decathlon ASP52 2s engine fit EmptySun 20 Feb 2011, 5:08 pm

I'm just looking at fitting out an old Seagull Decathlon 40 that Dave (Grounded) kindly gave me some time ago.
I want to put an ASP 52 2s in it and everything seems to fit nicely as it is - except the standard ASP silencer.
Any suggestions as to the best way to go?
Can you get spacers to put the silencer further away from the engine (you can see from the pics it needs about +12mm to get the silencer to clear the fuselage side).
As the plane is rather old, I'd prefer not to have to spend too much with JE to make me a special silencerif there's a cheaper way that can work.

Hi Malcolm..Don't go to the expense of a purpose made spacer, get a length of 10mm x 10 mm ali bar, mark it out for the fixing bolts and the area of the exhaust outlet, drill it out, bolt it on with longer bolts. works a treat for about 4 kwid. haven't done it on a 52 but it worked fine on an irvine 46 and a OS 35.

If you are stuck for ali bar, let me know and I'll borrow some from school lol!

Just noiced..have you put bigger wheels on that decathlon???? Shocked

Hi Malcolm, if you move the Mount around so the engine is sidewinder ,you should be abel to direct the silencer out the bottom of fuselage lol! then redo the throttle rod,get rid of that bowden cable there hopeless, to sloppy for good engine response Bravo hope this helps Bravo

Thanks Guys.
I think I'm gonna try the DIY spacer method first as it invloves much less work for me - there are a number of structural complications with turning the engine 90 degrees (cant get in there for 1st and the airframes a bit old for a 2nd) although I did think about that that first and it is the obvious way. Yes I know the bowden throttle cable is a bit dodgy although it has semed to sort of work on my Wot T and Wot 4. (I'm know I'm so unsophisticated!)
Anyway thanks to all for suggestions. Maybe I'll call Grumps as I believe he is the metalworker par-excellance and see if I can commission him to make me a spacer? Needs 12.5 x 12.5 aluminium bar.
The wheels - ah, yes, now that you mention it they do look slightly bigger dont they? Ummmm........

Yes.......... thanks to awl for the advysce.

This morning, I had decided this was my excuse, after many years of wonky holes, to buy a proper pillar drill, buy the aluminium bar and make a spacer myself - in the best real-aeromodeller traditions.

Then I looked again at the JE site and discovered they sell the exact spacer thing I require for £7 odd - cant think how I missed it at the first look. So I orderd one and of course I had to order another prop and of course some other bits - totalling £35.

I then thought that in these financially straightened times, the sensible and prudent thing to do now is not to buy the £100 pillar drill - I can carry on getting by without one - and I've got my spacer.

But the dissapointment at not getting a pillar drill was just too great so I'm picking it up tomorrow (and a combined disk/belt sander, well might as well while I'm there). Now, almost forgotten the spacer, I'm getting NEW TOOLS!

Net result, setting out to get a £7 exhaust spacer, I've managed to spend £200.

Aw well, that's how it goes !!

Thankz agaen to owl for the abvoice.

Just to close the loop on this (if you're still awake) I got the JE exhaust spacer and it's perfect.
They make these in 3 different bolt centres and each has 2 thicknesses - very useful if you need it - cost £7. Now the silencer clears the fuselage!
Simples.

Hi Yossy, just thought I would mention, after much advice, the best way to seal the manifold and stop any leaks is a touch of 5minute epoxy. Just my tuppence worth??

Malcolm. Make sure you clean all mating surfaces with thinners/meths first and only apply a thin smear of 5 min epoxy as it spreads as the bolts are tightened. After the engine has been used, the epoxy goes brittle so will come off easily with a blade, should you need to.

Now I've got over the exhaust issue I have another query.
Ideally I want to buy a new cowl as the existing one is a bit worse for wear.
I asked Dave (Grounded) who kindly gave me the plane and he and I thought it was a Seagull Decathlon 40 as marketed by J Perkins. But having asked them it now looks like it is not be theirs as there are a number of differences and so the JP spare cowl probably wont fit.
Dave tells me that Jim gave him the plane - so I wonder if Jim reads this can he remember what make this plane is? 66" span, red / white.
Or anybody else have any idea?

HO HO HO
Naturally, I'll check first with Mike and get his blessing before flying this SOLO lol!

After much webbing and looking at loads of large black horses, horse riders and various riding gear, saddles, stirrups etc on Gymkhana sites, I'm now pretty sure it's a Thunder Tiger Super Decathlon 40 - very similar to the Phoenix and Black Horse versions but slightly different - fascinating stuff eh??

Thunder Tiger are marketed by Amerang in the UK but I suspect this plane and it's spare parts are long discontinued. But now I'm on the trail I cant let it go yet, so I'll phone Anmerang tomorrow.

Have a feeling it's time to break out the Isopon and glass cloth for a patch-up.

Because this is getting very boring, I feel I should offer you this...........
