As you may, or may not know, I have now sold the L39 due to the fact it was too big to easily fly in and out of Lydd. Keeping a model of that value to use 3 or 4 times a year at jet events turned out to be too impractical for what I want in a model. Sad
The plane was sold, less the engine, to a guy who bought it for his 14 year old son to fly from their back yard Shocked
So, as Cliff was not comfortable flying his Graupner Harpoon II and had found a new love in the form of the Boomerang Elan, I am now the proud owner of his Harpoon. Laughing
The plane was already set up on my transmitter and I know that it can be flown successfully in and out of our field. The only difference being that Cliff kept his turbine (don't blame him....he put it together) and I have fitted the turbine from my L-39.Hopefully Sunday will be the day I get to fly it again Very Happy

Forgot to mention........

Cliff powered the Harpoon with his 17 lbs thrust Behotec engine and it flew really well.
I've put in my Wren 160 with 36lbs thrust...............It should get off ok What a Face

Awesome (when the F@@king engine starts!!) Shocked

Most of the flight is with throttle stick at the 1/3 to 1/2 position. However, I did do about 5 "flat out" passes without much of a run in (aim at the field, throttle to full, pass the strip then throttle back) and it was impressive. However, I think if built up speed before passing the strip, it would really shift.
I also did a pass at about 1/4 throttle then pulled the nose up to vertical. Just as the model was about to come to a stop, the throttle was pushed wide upon and she quickly accelerated vertically.
As much of the flight is not at WOT (wide open throttle), the 3 litre fuel tanks still gives me about 6m30s of flying with a good reserve.

Can't wait to fly it again (did try again today but had issues with engine starting)

Found the "Gremlin".........

The Harpoon had a switch fitted between the turbine battery and the ECU. Turns out that this switch had a high resistance which caused the battery voltage to drop as soon as a load (starter motor and glow plug) was applied. This caused the supply to the ECU to drop below the "Shut Down" failsafe voltage of 6v. As soon as I plugged the battery straight into the ECU, bypassing the switch, the engine started without fault and the supply voltage remained at over 7v (using a 7.4v LiPo).As the Wren ECU is turned on/off by the signal from the receiver, a switch is not really needed. So hopefully (fingers crossed) the next outing will be more successfull.

I'm just greatfull that the fault didn't appear during one of my two flights on Saturday!!
